Week 6

This is our final week on the topic of cooking. We all have had so much fun and now I would like to have web conferences with other people about cooking healthy meals. We will be talking to three different types of people from different counties in order to understand their perspectives about the topic we have been learning about. When speaking to these people you will have the opportunity to ask many questions whilst also learning about their profession.

We will be Skyping with a chef named Jamie Oliver as he is an ambassador for eating healthy meals.
We will be using Blackboard Collaboration in order to speak to a chef that works in The Royal Australian Navy. I chose this Navy because cooking at sea is very different to cooking in a kitchen at home.
Then finally we will be Skyping once again with a school in Africa. This way you can see what these children eat and how they cook their food.

By web conferencing we are all able to communicate whilst having a better understanding of how many different people cook around the world and where they get their produce from.

When we need to buy any type of food we can simply go to a shop, drive through a drive through or even purchase it online and wait for it to be delivered to our door. But what happens in the Navy when they are at sea, they cannot drive to a shop so how do they buy the foods that they require. This is an example of a question you might like to ask.

Week 5

This week you will be uploading the photos taken on the digital camera during the cooking experience to the computer.
These images will then be used to make a group recipe book about your chosen recipe. There are many tools that can be used to make these books.
This example of my recipe turned into a book using a 3D website located at http://www.zooburst.com
To make a book you can also use:

Excel also offers a different way to make a book. Watch the You tube clip to decide whether you wish to chose the tool.

Have fun exploring all the different tools and I can't wait to see your final product.

Week 4

This is going to be a busy week. Each group will be cooking their recipes and taking photos of the processes starting with the ingredients and utensils and then taking photos of each step as they are happening.

When cooking in the kitchen you will be supervised at all times and this is to ensure that you are all safe whilst cooking your recipe.
Before entering the kitchen we need to consider hygiene and the correct way to wash our hands in order to kill any germs and bacteria.

The following rules apply when cooking in the kitchen:
  1. Never run in the kitchen.
  2. Never touch anything electrical with wet hands.
  3. Keep handles of pots and pans on the stove top turned to the side. If they are sticking out at the front, you may knock them and have a horrible accident.
  4. Be careful with knives. A sharp knife is actually safer than a blunt one; blunt knives are more likely to slip and hurt you. But in our kitchen we will be using child friendly knives that are made just for children.
  5. Never use a blender or knife without adult supervision.
  6. Adults need to use oven gloves when opening the oven to put in anything and remove anything.
  7. Make sure you turn everything of once you have finished (ie the oven)
  8. Keep the kitchen bench and the rest of the work area clean and tidy as you go. A mess may become distracting.
  9. Be careful when removing containers or bowls from the microwave as they may be hot and the steam will also burn your skin.
  10. Never put your face near the oven when opening it, the heat coming from the oven is extremely hot and it will burn your eyes and face.
By following these rules your recipe will be a success whilst enjoying the experience.

All the recipes have now been cooked and it's time to enjoy the food within a class cafe. All of the children will be able to taste test their peers dishes whilst enjoying the feeling of actually being at a Cafe.

Week 3

This week each group will be writing a shopping list and making a menu for their chosen recipe. The shopping list then will be used to purchase the correct amount of ingredients to make the recipe. Once the shopping lists have been written with the correct amount of ingredients, we will be using online shopping to search, locate, put items into the basket and then purchase everything on the list.

When writing a shopping list make sure you take note about the quantity of the ingredients, if the recipe states that you need 750ml of milk then you may have to purchase a 1 litre bottle so that you have enough. These are the things you will have to discuss with one another.

Start by writing all the ingredients down the left hand side along with the quantity required. By doing this when you are on the online shopping website you can check the grams or litres that that item is sold in and you may need to purchase more just like the example of the milk above.

Make sure you remember it's better to have a little more, than not enough.

The online shopping websites we will be using will be:

       AND

We have just finished shopping online and now waiting for our shopping to arrive. It's time to make a menu for your chosen recipe.
There are endless options for making a menu. It can be made by applying art and craft skills and through the use of ICT. If your group decides to use art and craft then it can be painted, drawn and even different shapes and sizes with a stand attached so it stands on its own but if your group decides on ICT tools then a menu can be made through, a word document, a paint document and by using online tools and websites.
The following are some website you could use to make a menu. Have a search and see what you can find.

Week 2

This week we will be working in small groups in order to decide what type of healthy recipe will be cooked for the class cafe. There are so many different types of recipes to choose from, they range from muffins, cakes, salads, soups, drinks, burgers and many many more. So to help with deciding on a recipe we will be looking through recipe books, cooking magazines and using the internet to search for recipes. You can even ask mum or dad for ideas if you like.
Here are a few websites that you can visit to locate a recipe:

Once you are all in your groups it's time to start brainstorming in order for the group to decide on the most appropriate healthy recipe that suits all members of the group. There will be two different options to choose from, there will be online brainstorming and also brainstorming on a PMI chart.
The online websites allow the use of images with text in order to make an interactive overview of the ideas that were brainstormed.
The following are some online brainstorming websites you can have a look at:
A PMI Chart is a three-columned chart where the children within the group can record what they thought was good (Plus), what they found was bad (Minus), and what found different (interesting). By adding all the children's ideas into this chart it will help them to make the decision as a group about the recipe they will be cooking.

Now your group has decided on a recipe it's time to have a look and ensure that you understand the measurements that are required to make the recipe successfully. Many recipes state they require teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, ounce, pint, quart, pound, millimeter, liter, gram and kilogram. To convert these conversion successfully is can be difficult and if it the measurements are incorrect the recipe will be a disaster.

Have a look at the websites below they will do the conversions for you. They are easy to use you simply add what you want to convert from and it will calculate it for you and inform you of the new calculation.
This is an example; add a pint of flour by using the conversion calculator I now know it is a cup of flour.

Week 1

Because we have been learning and discussing where the food we eat comes from. I think that we should extend that knowledge through learning about The Healthy Living Pyramid and The Healthy Living Plate.
The Healthy Living Pyramid is used in order to understand what foods are the best to eat and how much we should be eating. Within the food pyramid there are five different food groups and they are:
  • Bread, cereals, rice, pasta and noodles
  • Vegetables and legumes
  • Fruit
  • Milk, yoghurt and cheese
  • Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nut and legumes
This week we will start by watching two You tube clips and then complete two different activities.
  1. This will be an art activity where each child will be able to draw or look in magazines and then cut out foods that they think are healthy. These pictures then need to be glued onto paper plates in accordance to what proportions are required for a healthy balanced meal and the healthy living plate.

     2. This is an online activity which can be accessed on the computer, an iphone or smart phone
and even an ipad if you have one. The activity has a list of foods and you are required to
identify which area of the pyramid it corresponds with. All the foods have their own
nutritional value chart where you can read this information in order to decide where it
belongs. Some of the foods are easy to identify which food groups they belong to but some
         are tricky so be careful.
This activity will be used within the classroom but please feel free to have a play at home,
show your mum and dad, even you younger siblings.

The image above is what the activity looks like on the website, follow the link provided in order to experience, explore and understand the five food groups.

There are also other website which provide games related to the food pyramid and healthy eating. If you get time and wish to explore this topic further please feel free to explore the following websites.

Introduction

Over the next six weeks we will be on a journey discovering about healthy foods and the way that healthy foods can be turned into healthy recipes.
Throughout the unit we will learn how many other subjects (Mathematics, English, Art and Craft) relate to healthy meals and how the use of ICT can be incorporated.
Each week we will be discussing an arrange of topics, be involved in hands on activities, turning the class room into a Cafe and finishing with web conferences with other people from around the world.
